New Tor Browser Bundles

by erinn | April 28, 2012

The Tor Browser Bundles have all been updated to the latest Firefox 12.0 as well as a number of other software updates, bugfixes, and new features. We've rebranded Firefox so it should now be more easy to distinguish between it and your normal Firefox. We've also added Korean and Vietnamese to the available languages.

UPDATE: The Mac OS X 64-bit bundles had a minor Vidalia problem that prevented TorBrowser from being launched. They have been updated to 2.2.35-9.1 and are now available on the website.

https://www.torproject.org/download

Tor Browser Bundle (2.2.35-9)

  • Update Firefox to 12.0
  • Update OpenSSL to 1.0.1b
  • Update Libevent to 2.0.18-stable
  • Update Qt to 4.8.1
  • Update Libpng to 1.5.10
  • Update HTTPS Everywhere to 2.0.2
  • Update NoScript to 2.3.9
  • Rebrand Firefox to TorBrowser (closes: #2176)
  • New Firefox patches
  • Make the 32-bit Tor Browser Bundle compatible with OS X 10.5

Make the two bundles, please. One with a Tor symbolic, comfortable, another with the Firefox branding(ask them, work closer), or at least with Aurora's (geeky Firefox, who knows) and with a somehow hidden(easily hide-able) Vidalia icon. I mean - you are taking responsibility for so many situations with the new TBB icons.

can you guys pleasse open a forum?? I have lots of questions I want to ask about online privacy and don't know where else to go.

I second this. But rather than asking questions I want to answer questions. This is close to impossible here on the blog since my answers will take longer than one week to get back to the user with these long moderation times.

Please open a "official" Tor forum. I believe it is important for all Tor users to be able to discuss and help each other with security and Tor related questions in order to fully understand how to stay secure while using Tor.

I will reiterate what I have stated previously:

I appreciate your offering support by email and telephone. I am rather surprised and perplexed, however, that you would offer such direct, one-to-one support while apparently not offering a public support forum. I cannot imagine how this can be cost-effective for you. Surely, you must receive many repeat questions. If people were directed to a forum and at least strongly encouraged-- if not actually _required_-- to search for answers to their questions before making a new post, it would no doubt save you much unnecessary time and effort. Additionally, in a forum, contributing members of the public would invariably at least sometimes answer questions accurately, thereby saving time and effort for Tor staff by allowing them to simply post to corroborate such answers, rather than having to write them themselves.

the black icons are still there. and it is no more using aero effect. I didn't like it.

Same here (Windows 7 x64)! I really liked the Aero feature. And, if you try to bookmark a page...well, good luck with all the transparency issues (see screenshot URLs below).

What confounds me is these *exact* issue arouse in previous TBB versions, and then were (recently) fixed...but...now they're back; arrrg!
Attn. Erin, Mike, et al.:

How do you all *not* realize there are such noticeable and annoying bugs? With this version the minimize, maximize, and close buttons for TBB are black, and bookmark function isn't visually correct (nor particularly usable). Do you not test each new version of TBB? (that's an honest question I hope someone will answer)

I am running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3, and I updated to the most recent version (the version in this post). I have tried 64-bit - which my machine is - and Vadalia simply freezes whenever it attempts to connect to the TOR network. I can't find any solution to this problem.

I also tried to run the 32-bit version, which did connect to the TOR network, but as soon as I typed a search inquiry into DUCKDUCKGO, Vadalia crashes. I re-opened, and the same thing occurred.

Currently, I cannot connect to the TOR network at all. Is anyone else having similar issues? If so, does anyone know of a fix. I need to get connected to the network ASAP.

Thanks.

The window-appearance is different from what I've set at my computer. Torbrowser/Firefox is partly gray. The close-button in Torbrowser/Firefox is missing too.

Tor Browser Bundle 2.2.35-9
Windows 7 / 32 Bit

Please bring back Vidalia and the stand-alone Torbutton for Firefox! So everyone can use his own Firefox and switch to Tor if it's necessary.

Or build up a good update-function into the Browser-Bundle, that all settings are retained. It is annoying to save the profile every and insert manually after the Browser-Bundle is updated.

But the Torbutton / Vidalia Bundle was much easier to handle. Please bring it back!

This isn't working for me on a MBP (Mac Book Pro5,2, Mac OS X 10.6.8), using the TorBrowser-2.2.35-9-osx-x86_64-en-US.zip download).

It's gets as far as the 'Establishing a Tor Circuit' point, then stalls with the spinning beachball, at which point I have to do a forced kill after a few minutes. I've had to downgrade to 2.2.35-8 for the meantime, with which, I'm posting this ...

I just downloaded the newest version of the TorBrowserBundle for Firefox 12.0. It is continually crashing on me. I'm using a Mac, OS X Lion 10.7.3. Had no problems with the prior version of TorBundle. Specifically, if I click the browser back arrow to go to a previous page, the TorBrowser quits with the error message "TorBrowser quit unexpectedly". If I try to go to http://ip-check.info/ to check my connection, the TorBrowser quits as well. Vidalia is still running and if I check the message log everything looks normal; there are no error messages. I have no problem with running Firefox 12.0 alone without Tor.

Are there any settings or preferences I need to set with this new version of the Tor Browser Bundle? Can I safely use the previous version of Torbrowser (TorBrowser-2.2.35-8-osx-x86_64-en-) until this problem is fixed? Is anyone else experiencing similar problems?

WTF is this. I just downloaded it, and the bundled Firefox will not start anymore.

After extensive analysis, I found that tbb-firefox.exe cannot be opened, because I don't have the permission to do so. Windows is unable to display the current owner, nor change it permanently.

After changing the owner to myself and editing the permissions, nothing changed. It always states "The parameter is incorrect" when opening and reverts the owner every time I check the properties.

The same issue seems to appear in the unstable version no matter what I do. Please fix this ASAP.

I have tried the latest Tor bundle on 3 machines, 2 running Windows 7 and one with XP.

When I do a proxy check via ip-check.info, regarding Charset, I only get an orange reading and the advice:

“Your browser does not return any value for this header. This differs from the Torbutton default setting and may ease browser recognition”.

What am I doing wrong? What do I need to change to achieve what is said to be the default setting?

Thanks for your help?

hello:

hope this message gets to the right people. its about flash cookies and tor security.

installed newest tor package on osx, latest built.

after a little test-surfing the web i installed the "better privacy" plugin in tor-browser to see what flash does to the tor browser.

"better privacy" listed a douzand flash cookies in user/...../library/preferences/macromedia, including a skype cookie and the default flash player cookie.

don`t know enough about the potential damage such cookies can do to tor privacy, but decided to bring the issue up here.

is the tor browser immune to those flash cookies in ot is it necessary to use "better privacy" and instruct it to delete all flash cookies every few seconds to be safe ?

thanks for any enlightened guidance in this.

The flash plugin should not work inside Tor Browser. This means no flash cookies are created or read by Tor Browser at all, and therefore it is immune.

But if those flash cookies you saw were created while you were running Tor Browser you should worry, since that means flash is working, which is dangerous.

Downloaded the latest TBB (I have Firefox 12.0), once done I noticed that the right top corner bottoms minimize, maximize, and close are not showing, they are currently just a black rectangle. They work though, just not showing. Any ideas?

Should I reload it?

Should I update the system or get rid of Fire Fox?

Should I go to another system- IE, or a PC?

vidalia starts as usual and successfully connects to tor, but an error message appears: vidalia was unable to start the configured web browser.

when trying to manually launch tbb-firefox, error message says: the parameter is incorrect.

the older version worked well,

any help?

I welcome the re-branding and the search engine additions.

A few things for now:

1.)
"Make Download Manager memory-only (closes: #4017)"

(BY the way, I checked the formatting help page and could find no indication of how to blockquote text.)

I was about to ask whether this was any worse for privacy than shipping TBB with "browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash" ENABLED by default when I decided to check again first...Lo and behold, I see that "browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash" is now set to "false" in the default configuration of TBB.

Was there a ticket that had been created about this?

I had asked about it in past blog comments but never received a response.

2.) Is there a reason why "New Identity" is the /first/ selection under the big green Vidalia icon in the navigation toolbar?

This placement makes it very easy to accidentally hit "New Identity", thereby causing all of the tabs one had open to vanish into the ether.

3.) Regarding closing TBB:

Simply closing all instances of Tor Browser Firefox does not remove the little green onion icon from one's system panel, and I believe that Vidalia/Tor /does/, in fact, /remain running/ even after all instances of the Tor /browser/ itself have been manually closed. I realize that closing Vidalia is as simple as right-clicking on said icon and then clicking on 'Exit', the selection all the way at the bottom. But there does not appear any way to /open/ the browser again once it has been closed, short of exiting Vidalia and starting TBB all over again from scratch, which of course means making the initial connection to Tor all over from scratch again. Now maybe I'm missing something here but it seems to me that /either/ completely closing the /browser/ portion of TBB should actually close /all/ of TBB (i.e. Vidalia/Tor as well) OR, if Vidalia/Tor are to remain running even after the browser portion of the bundle has been closed (as is the case now), then there should be a way of opening the browser again without having to exit Vidalia/Tor and start all over from scratch. Otherwise, just what is the point of keeping Vidalia/Tor running after the browser itself has been (irretrievably) closed?

This announcement appears to be missing any reference to the "Linux, BSD, and Unix" edition of TBB being updated to version 2.2.35-10.

Also, toward the end of the page at
https://www.torproject.org/docs/verifying-signatures.html.en
I find the statement,
"Note that sometimes Sebastian Hahn (key 0x140C961B) signs the Linux TBB packages."

But I can find no fingerprint for /this/ key (Sebastian Hahn's), such as there is for Erinn Clark's key further-up on the page.

RUNNING TBB FROM LIVE ENVIORNMENT

I had tried running the previous version of TBB (2.2.35-9 for Linux, BSD, Unix) from within several live GNU/Linux environments but was never successful. It would always get stuck around "loading network status" or the like and just hang indefinitely. I did not have any such problem when running TBB from an installed GNU/Linux system, however.

Before I go to the trouble of trying to run the current version of TBB from a live environment, I figured I would at least post this and see if anyone knows of any reason why TBB shouldn't be able to be run from a live environment.

How can you say that original person using TOR can't be used?

Suppose, the proposition is
MY CONNECTION >>> USA/UK IP >>> POLAND >>>>> RUSSIA >>>> DESTINATION/FACEBOOK.

Now suppose someone wants to trace me from my Facebook profile or the last IP that has been recorded by the destination, one needs just following steps even if I have done my best to conceal every bit of my information over Facebook in the last 5-6 months:

1. The logs (which will include IP address of Russia sending connection to Facebook) will be obtained from the Facebook Admins.

2. Then that IP address (ISP of Russia) must have recorded the IP that interacted with it, ie.. it must have IP address of Poland.

3. Then the ISP of Poland will be asked to give the details of the user who used IP address of that ISP and thereafter ISP will reveal that the connection was maintained from USA/UK and

4. finally the USA/UK based ISP will reveal MY IP ADDRESS and I can be caught anytime!

The problem will be worst if 2 or all of the nodes belong to single country as it will be very easy to obtain logs within a few days.

George D'costa.

Any clarification?

In your example, they will be able to get the Russian IP address without problem, either from Facebook or any ISP between the node in Russia and Facebooks ISP.

Now if they want to know everyone that was connected to the Russian node at the same time, that will not only be the Poland IP, but many other IP addresses, and since encryption is used, they cannot know which one of all these IP addresses leads to you. Say they want to try everyone, then every node that was connected to Russia in turn had many different nodes connected to them.

They will not be able to differ you from the large portion of other users that was running Tor at the same time.

Tor uses something called Onion Routing to make it close to impossible to trace users even if they would be able to see all the connections. Read more about it if interested.

Thank you for the valuable information and relieving me of unnecessary tension and botheration. Actually I am a social activist and using TOR to blow whistles against liquor, land mafia and human traffickers. I have exposed 5 biggest scams in the last 3 years and I feel that they can get me eliminated if they are able to find me as my exposures have caused loss to their illegal business. They are mostly gangsters and I was afraid of all this. I use home network because in cyber cafes CCTVs and UserLog information is maintained. Activists like me have to take precaution everytime and TOR is indeed great which has succeeded in protecting life and dignity of people involved in exposing corruption. I shall always remain indebted to TOR. May God bless the TOR developers and all the users who are well-settled in life and and are not social activists must donate something every month to TOR so that it may continue to help the people like us in preserving the human life and dignity. May God bless you my sons!

Runa is it safe to have cookies enabled when using Tor browser bundle? Is it also safe to enable "Acecpt third-party cookies" - will identity still be hidden??

Cookies are safe generally, and are in fact enabled by default in Tor Browser Bundle. Cookies are only dangerous when they remain for a longer time, since that would allow someone to build a profile of you. But Tor Browser Bundle deletes all cookies every time it is closed.

Tor really needs to FOCUS on a FEW products, otherwise all of your MANY products suffer, e.g., you should CONCENTRATE on:

a) Tor base code
b) Solutions to Tor blocking, e.g., bridges and Obfuscate proxy
c) Hidden Services (speed, connectivity, etc)
d) TorBrowserBundle (incl. TorButton)
e) user-outreach (e.g., make a user forum, damn it!)
f) Increasing node number and geographic diversity

Version 2.2.35-8 ran without a flaw (Win7), but after upgrading to 2.2.35-9 Vidalia is no longer able to start Firefox. Unfortunately I didn't save the previous version, so now TOR is unaccesible to me. Why don't you also keep some older versions available on the site for those having problems with the newest one?

The latest Tor browser bundles is doing well in China, which may have the most sophisticated internet censorship in the world. I used a anonymous proxy to establish the first tor circle, then switched to normal set. it has worked well since then, even after several times of reboot. I am grateful to all Tor developer and Tor user for your great help. That means lots to me, I believe you contributions are precious to all people eager for speech freedom under censorship.

Hello

I am using windows xp and can't connect to onion sites only via tor2web

I have tried to using bridge and also different ISPS

please advise...

Give more information. What exactly happens when you try to connect to an onion? Error message or blank page? Does it happen immediately or after a few seconds/minutes trying to load? Have you tried several onion sites, some that is known to be up?

In Vidalia, check what is happening in "View the Network" while trying to load the onion site.

Hello,

Would it be possible for someone to update the Obfsproxy TBB alpha bundle? I'd like to run it to help people, but it seems a bit out of date.

We'll update them eventually -- obfsproxy is very relevant in Iran this week, so it would be nice to have more bundles out. But I'd rather have vanilla 0.2.3.x TBBs, since having testing on those is holding up the 0.2.2.36 release.

Also, running the obfsproxy tbb bundles won't help other people. They're client bundles.

Latest version of Tor 2.2.37-1 doesn't connect for me on Win 7 Firefox browser, cursor disappears and I have to do a hard re-boot. The older versions were working fine.
